Desert Storm

The Persian Gulf War that took place for less than a year from late 1990 to early 1991 is commonly referred to as Desert Storm. The reason for this war was to allow Kuwait to be free from the control of Iraq. The United States is often thought to have been the only forces involved in the movement. Yet they were one of many from the United Nations that led this endeavor and succeeded in freeing Kuwait.

The attacks during Desert Storm were very well planned and Iraq didn’t stand much of a chance. This is why the war was over in such a short span of time. Many believe this is what President Bush intended when he sent troops to Iraq a couple of years ago. Yet this mission has proven to be more difficult and it continues to drag out.

There are still many that believe the United States and the United Nations had no right to get involved in the conflict between Iran and Iraq. Yet they continue to hold the stand that they were justified in their efforts. One of the main reasons what to protect the supply of oil that the United States is dependent upon from Saudi Arabia. Over the years though the number of people that support the efforts of Desert Storm have continued to drop. Some believe it was nothing more than another chance for the United States to show their authority once again.

Even though the war was very short, the memories of it will continue to affect many that went. There are veterans of Desert Storm that suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Some of them were severely wounded and they continue to try to overcome their disabilities every day. Others weren’t lucky enough to return home from the war. They left behind a legacy that includes giving their own life for the protection of others.

The fact that this invasion of Desert Storm was done so with the support of the United Nations though was quite impressive. It shows that this is an organization that does have plenty of power behind it. This should serve as a warning to those Nations not a part of it what can happen.
